Richard was a friend since elementary school (Park).  A group from the old neighborhood  spent much time at  F Street Park (Cooper) participating in a variety of activies.  Rich of course loved baseball and was very accomplished at it.  I am very saddened to hear of his death.  I often saw him at the home of friends and the local gym.  Since I moved to Florida, I had lost contact.  He was just a great guy.  Prayers go out to his family.

Rich was the first person I remember that was not a family member.  We lived at 5th and E street and we played football on the empty lot between 5th and 6th and E.  Rich and I played baseball together at F street and won the State Championship as Seniors.  I was lucky enough to have a good conversation with him at Skeet's funeral.

It is tough to learn of Rich's passing. Rich is one of the good guys in our world. He is a standup fellow who I admired. The famous high school memory I have about Rich is when he played the role of a Tinkers Man in the high school play. He "brought down the house"!!! But later in life, his professional approach to his position at the city, helped the dept work a lot better. Thanks Rich. You were a person to be admired.

Prayers for the Schabauer family. Sorry to hear the the news of another 1st streeter passing. As I grew up with Richard, Andy and Skeets and lived on 1st & E. I was just talking to my sister in law in Omaha about Richs passing. Going through Park school, Richard' s neighbors were the Hergenraders. Gloria Hergenrader has been married to my brother Jim for almost 40 years. Since the passing of both our parents, Jim and Gloria don't visit Lincoln that often. Gloria and I shared a lot of Park school and neighborhood stories that included Richard. One of my favorites was camping overnight in the Boy Scout cabin and the antics, of putting food in sleeping bags, mainly mine, as I remember Rich putting a jar of mustard in my bag. Skeets, Roger Hadley, Rich, Reggie Robinson, Kennedy and that's all I remember. Lots of laughing, and baseball at Cooper Park. Rest In Peace brothers, Love you all. John Dockery .

Losing Hollibaugh a short while ago and now Schwabauer it's coming clear that people close to us are reaching the end of happy life.  Seeing Rich's name appear in memorial, I have to add a few words, similar to Alex's.  I had the extreme pleasure of growing up in the bottoms and meeting and befriending many of the kids in our neighborhood.  As many have said meeting and making friends in school, Park then Everett and then Lincoln High, many memories stay and probably grow.  I had the distinct pleasure of catching both Skeets and Rich, in little league baseball, at F-Street Park, where we won the city championship and continued through Lincoln High, where Rich and Skeets again lead the team with their pitching and team leadership to a state champiionship.  Rich was truly a fun guy and later a great citizen of Lincoln, as a man.  He will be remembered well.
