John Charles Cooper

John Charles Cooper, PhD., 45, of Burke, Virginia, died December 21, 1991 at Fairfax Hospital in Virginia following a heart attack.  Funeral services were held December 27 in Virginia.

John was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and raised in Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1963.  He received his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.  He did post doctoral studies at Purdue University in Indiana where he met and married Linda Thomas.  They moved to the Washington, DC area in 1974.

At the time of his death, Dr. Cooper was head of Solution Chemistry at the Naval Research Laboratory, president of the Board of Directors of the NRL Credit Union, a member of the Science advisory board of UNL, volunteer coordinator for the American Mathematics Competition for Junior High students, and was active in the Signal Hill Homes Association Board in Burke, VA.  In 1989, Dr. Cooper was honored by UNL as one of the five annual members of the Masters Program for special achievement in his field.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Robert, Matthew and Stephanie; his parents, I. John and Phyllis Cooper of Columbus; a brother, Rev. James W. Cooper, pastor of Assumption Church of Dwight and St. Wenceslaus Church of Bee; and a sister, Sharon Westerfield of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
